The main part of the scheme was the carefully phased repaving of the town centre area in College Road from the junction with Station Road to Kimberly Road. This had to be carried out without blocking the entrances to any shops or businesses during walking hours and also maintaining a minimum pedestrian through route of 1.8m wide at all times.
The new paving that was used on the scheme was traditional large element concrete flags (A.S.P.). There were also some areas of granite setts and tactile paved approaches to pedestrian crossings. New tree pits with iron surrounds and some new street furniture was installed. The emphasis was very much on eliminating clutter and allowing pedestrians more direct routes along the footway without having to negotiate obstacles. (i.e. when installing seats, bins and tree pits have them all in a line instead of spread randomly across the footway).
Another crucial area of the scheme that had to be programmed following careful liaison and planning in conjunction with London Buses and the Metropolitan Police was the reconstruction of the bus depot entrance to one of the busiest bus depots in London.
We had a very tight programme window in which to totally reconstruct the bus station entrance using a 300mm thick reinforced concrete slab on 300mm of DOT type 1 as the main structure, overlaid with 100mm of blacktop with an S.M.A. surface course. Within this timeframe we had to install new drainage and ducting as well as realign kerb lines and change the existing levels and falls.
